Although highly unlikely, emergencies involving an aircraft diaster are possible. It is important for residents and businesses surrounding airports and areas with high air traffic to plan ahead on how you, your family, or your co-workers will respond to a aircraft emergency.
Aircraft emergencies are generally violent, immediate, with minimal warning of occuring. For this reason, it is important to prepare for emergency response by including aircraft emergencies in your disaster plans.
WHAT CAN I DO IN AN AIRCRAFT EMERGENCY?
Just like all major emergencies, it's important to remember the "Four S's"
STAY CALM - Panic is contagious. Staying calm in a major emergency is crucial for your safety.
SELF ASSESSMENT - If you are within the damage radius of the crash site, check yourself for major injuries
SURROUNDINGS - Take a moment to assess your immediate area for other hazards
SURVIVORS - If you are able, assist survivors and the injured with first aid and evacuation
Most importantly, do not disturb any debris or part of the aircraft. Investigators use every piece of the aircraft found at the crash site for their investigation.
