TSUKUBA-YAKI
Ceramics of a Sister City Artist

Both scientist and ceramic artist, Toshio Tsuga of Tsukuba, Japan, has devised extraordinary technologies of fusing man-made rubies on a ceramic surface to create stunning pottery. He uses local clays once dismissed as “mud suitable only for roof tiles.” Believing one’s first duty is to capitalize on whatever his hometown’s earth provides, Tsuga digs from his own hillside, builds high tech kilns from salvage, and generates electricity to exceed 2,700ºF, yielding truly unique surface.

Master Tsuga will teach and demonstrate at IFAC, September 12-16th.

SPIRIT OF JAPAN
Tradition & Transition

The Spirit of Japan: Tradition and Transition, held in conjunction with our Tsukuba-Yaki exhibition is a survey of the immense influence that the Japanese culture has had on ceramic art. From the rustic, spontaneous ware used in the Zen tea ceremony, to the use of modern technology, this show exemplifies the power of the Japanese aesthetics in the art of ceramics.
