2/11 Marine Adoption Ceremony

8/30/2007

The City of Irvine will formally adopt the Marines and Sailors of 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division (2/11) based at Camp Pendleton during a ceremony and reception on Saturday, September 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the Irvine Civic Center.

The ceremony reaffirms the City’s commitment to supporting the efforts of our men and women in the military and their families. The goal of the adoption is to encourage mutually beneficial interactions between the community and the Marines and their families, and to create strong and lasting ties between the unit, residents and the City. The program allows the City to demonstrate its appreciation for the sacrifices of those who are protecting the freedom that we enjoy today.

The City approved the proposal to adopt 2/11 on April 10, 2007, both when the unit is serving at Camp Pendleton and when deployed. The 2/11 is a 155mm howitzer unit comprised of approximately 800 service members whose primary mission is to provide direct support to the 5th Marine Regiment in the form of traditional artillery, or by providing batteries to serve as provisional rifle companies. 2/11 was founded in 1918 when they were formed to man the trenches in France during WWI. The legacy continues today, as 2/11 deploys troops to various military and recovery operations worldwide.

The 2/11 Adoption Committee is seeking volunteers interested in helping plan and execute a variety of activities between the 2/11 and the City. Volunteers are currently needed to begin collecting letters and compiling care packages to send to the families of Marines and sailors presently deployed in Iraq and here at home. For more information or to volunteer, contact 949-724-6606.

The adoption ceremony and reception is free and open to the public. For additional event information, call 949-724-6606.
