In 1959 the University of California Regents authorized the university’s administration to find sites for three new campuses in California. A building site in the Irvine Ranch was to become Irvine was selected. The first vision of the town that would become Irvine was presented by William Pereira to the Irvine Company Board of Directors on April 14, 1960. The plan was amazingly simple: a 1,000-acre university campus would be surrounded by a 10,000-acre town with a population of 100,000.
