| Honoree
The City of Irvine appreciates the service of the following honoree:
Wall of Recognition | | Albert Tjan | | Distinguished Citizen | | Dr. Albert Tjan generously and genuinely serves others, especially those less fortunate than himself. He opened his dental practice in Irvine in 1985. It was then that he became active in the Irvine Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Student Business Breakfast Committee from 1985 to 1991 and served as chair in 1990. He unselfishly volunteered with the Chamber for 16 years. Family is the most important thing to Dr. Tjan. In 1997 his family and four other families charted a new Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Troop 243. Through his time and financial investment, the Troop grew from only 5 boys to almost 100 scouts in two years. He served as Treasurer from 1997 to 2003, Troop Committee Chairperson from 2003 to 2006 and as Assistant Scoutmaster from 2006 to 2010. His son reached the Eagle Scout rank at the age of 14. His Eagle Community Service Project was to assemble 2500 hygiene kits that were distributed through the OCRM mobile medical clinic. In 1986, Dr. Tjan received an appointment to the Family Services Advisory board which was part of the Community Services Department in the City of Irvine. It was during this time that he met Jim Palmer, current President of the Orange County Rescue Mission which started his long-term commitment to help the homeless. With the help of such unselfish citizens such as Dr. Tjan, OCRM is the countys most comprehensive private homeless services provider. Dr. Tjan ultimately was involved with adopting and decorating two rooms at the OCRM Villages of Hope. The first room was in 2006 sponsored by his Boy Scout Troop 243. His family organized a bike-a-thon to raise $4,000 for the project. In 2007 he chaired the second Village of Hope room for the Exchange Club of Irvine. He joined the Sunrise Exchange Club in 1985 where he served as President 1988-1989 and again 1998-1999. When Sunrise gave up its charter in 2004, the members moved to the Exchange Club of Irvine where he served as President from 2010-2011. His 3 decades of community service in Irvine definitely fit your description of being unique and marked by excellence and worth of honor. Throughout this time his exceptional character has been respected by countless citizens. |
