| How to Create a Resume Your resume is a summary of the relevant facts about yourself. It highlights your strengths, skills and abilities, through your work or volunteer experience and notable accomplishments. When writing and creating your resume, it is very important to be concise and keep it to one page. The top of your resume includes your name, email address, and phone number. If you do not already have a professional email address, now is the time to create one. All information presented on your resume should be listed in reverse chronological order, with the most current work history or volunteer experience listed first. Key components of your resume include: - SUMMARY – Your summary statement should be unique to you and offer interesting background information about yourself. If the employer reads nothing more than your summary statement, he should get a great picture of who you are as a person, and what you have to offer the company/organization.
-
EDUCATION – Name your high school and include the year you graduated or expected graduation year. Also include any significant activities, clubs, sports and/or awards. When listing your extracurricular activities, list the most current activities first. Be sure to list any ROP classes or online courses that add additional skills or certifications to your experience. -
EMPLOYMENT HISTORY and/or VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE – List employer company name or charity/organization name. State the dates, job duties, responsibilities and achievements associated with each job. List your work history separate from your volunteer history. Always list the most current experience first. -
SKILLS – Are you bilingual? Are you CPR and First Aid certified? These skills help make you stand out. If you have experience in Html codes, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Final Cut Pro, list those programming skills. However, do they have anything to do with the job you are applying for? Your resume is a lifelong tool and should be updated each time you gain skills and/or get a new job. Back to Main Resume page |
