The Healthy City Healthy Planet initiative is an affirmation of Irvine’s long-held commitment to health, fitness, well-being and the sustainability of our community.

Through the integration of multiple practices into all aspects of City planning and the delivery of municipal services, we are actively supporting the health of our City, our citizens and our planet on a daily basis. This easy-to-navigate page integrates our efforts – as well as our partnerships – under one umbrella. Charitable Organizations, Volunteering and Philanthropy
The City of Irvine supports numerous organizations through partnerships, free meeting spaces or help with outreach; promotes volunteer opportunities; and provides easy access, through Irvine Cares, to assist citizens who generously support local, regional and global efforts when disaster relief is most needed.

Children, Youth and Families
The City of Irvine supports its multicultural family structure in many ways. For example, the comprehensive Strategic Plan for Children, Youth and Families defines the City’s focus on health and well-being, from pre-kindergarten care and school readiness to children’s health/mental health.

Drug Abuse Prevention & Intervention
Drug prevention is a key component of the City of Irvine’s outreach. So, too, are readily available resources – nonprofit, Irvine Unified School District, county and national - for both juvenile and adult intervention.

Education
Irvine provides more than $5 million annually to Irvine Unified School District and the Irvine schools of Tustin Unified School District. Ongoing support, through the Educational Partnership Fund, by partnering with the nonprofit Irvine Public Schools Foundation, and in other ways, helps provide resources for one of the best school systems in the country.

Employment
The City of Irvine directs those looking for work to various organizations that can support the job-seeking process. This includes Irvine Youth Employment Services that provides free application referral sources.

Environmental Programs for Sustainability
City, state and federal regulations and guidelines, as well as energy and water providers, help the community make better use of materials, recyclables, solar and other methods that cost less or provide more renewable solutions. The City’s Environmental Programs provides leadership in the areas of energy, green building, recycling, water use and zero waste.

Youth Action Team is a volunteer, middle school and high school community service program that plans and implements citywide outreach.

Health, Hospitals and Financial Resources
Both the health and financial well-being of our residents matter deeply to the City of Irvine. Programs and access to partnered programs help those struggling to meet daily needs. The goal of the Irvine Children’s Health Program, for example, is to ensure that all Irvine children have access to health services. Irvine is served by two hospitals, Hoag Hospital Irvine and Kaiser Permanente.

Healthy Eating and Food Donations
There are many resources in which to find healthy, fresh produce citywide. Much activity is centered at the Orange County Great Park, including a program to donate produce to food banks. Also, programs such as ReadyFitGo, a fitness exposition conducted by the City of Irvine and community partners; a school-based fitness program called Ready Fit Challenge; and Youth Wellness Committees that are student clubs at Northwood and University high schools help promote fitness citywide.

Housing, Workforce Housing, Assistance and Shelter
The City-established Irvine Community Land Trust is dedicated to providing affordable housing opportunities; there also is emerging workforce housing (IBC Vision Plan) and housing assistance through area support groups and Orange County.

Parks, Bikeways and Open Space
The City of Irvine has 18 Community Parks, 37 Neighborhood Parks, the Orange County Great Park and 5,250 acres of City-owned open space and thousands of more acres managed by the Irvine Ranch Conservancy. There are nearly 45 miles of dedicated bikeways citywide.

Public Safety, Outreach and Emergency Preparedness
Irvine’s Public Safety Department supports the community beyond its policing mission, through outreach and prevention to help educate youth in areas of drug and alcohol use and proper behavior. The D.A.R.E. program, for example, provides young students with the tools to resist peer pressure in inappropriate and illegal activity. Public Safety also coordinates Emergency Preparedness.

Senior Services and Disability Support
The City of Irvine, which has two senior centers, offers and supports numerous programs for its seniors as well as disabled residents – from fitness classes to transportation to help for the homebound.

Sustainable Planning and Building Programs
The City of Irvine incorporates sustainable and sound community planning principles into its everyday processes for planning and building the physical environment of the City. These include health-oriented land use policies and zoning requirements, Green Building Code standards, and extensive park and open space planning. Workforce housing as shown by the IBC Vision Plan is part of this outreach: The plan, approved in July 2010, is the largest workforce housing area in the City and will be expanded in the future with nearly 6,000 additional housing units. In 2011, there were nearly 89,000 jobs and 4,500 businesses in the IBC.

Irvine Transportation Network, below, provides citywide traffic and transportation information, including iShuttle and its expanded routes; Metrolink; OCTA; Spectrumotion - Personal Commuting Services; and others.

Veterans Support
As with the entire community, the City of Irvine supports its veterans, specifically through information, community events on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and through the administration of the country’s only memorial dedicated to those servicemen and servicewomen who have died in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts – the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial at Northwood Community Park.

Victims of Abuse
The City of Irvine urges residents who have or are being abused to immediately reach out to a helping hand. There are several resources, including the City’s Victim Services easy-to-use Resource Guide, and FOR Families. If you are in danger, call 911.

Welfare of Animals
The Irvine Animal Care Center is renowned for its care of animals and rescue and adoption policies that find hundreds of homes each year for lost and abandoned pets.
